Thunderbirds force six turnovers

OGDEN (October 2, 2015)- In-state rivalries generally aren't one-sided affairs.

Weber State and Southern Utah have finished within a score of each other their last three matchups, in a rivalry game featuring the Big Sky’s Beehive State representatives.

Whether it was a rivalry or not, the Thunderbirds were the aggressors early and often, as Southern Utah climbed to a 44-0 road shutout over Weber State at Stewart Stadium in Ogden.

Southern Utah forced six turnovers, including five interceptions. The Thunderbirds also limited Weber State to 4-of-16 third-down conversions, and stopped the Wildcats on a pair of fourth-down conversions.

The two teams were scoreless late into the first quarter, until Southern Utah’s Naia Ursua had a 68-yard punt return to give the Thunderbirds a 7-0 lead. Then, early in the second quarter, LeShaun Sims had a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown. Southern Utah held a 17-0 lead at halftime.

Two Southern Utah rushing touchdowns- a three-yard run by Mike Sharp, and a six-yard run by Jarom Healey- gave the Thunderbirds a 31-0 lead going into the fourth quarter. Another pick-six by Taylor Nelson keyed the fourth quarter scoring for SUU.

Offensively, Southern Utah finished with 345 yards compared to Weber State’s 247 yards. The two pick-sixes gives SUU three interception-returns-for-touchdowns on the season, with all coming in conference play.

Southern Utah is now 2-0 in conference, while Weber State falls to 1-1.
