Two Move On To Quarterfinals, Five More Athletes Qualify For Nationals

Two Big Sky Conference Track and Field athletes qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2014 NCAA West Regionals on Friday in Fayetteville, Ark. Five other athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships on June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.

Portland State’s Jazmin Ratcliff and Montana’s Lindsey Hall qualified for the quarterfinals in the 100-meter hurdles. Ratcliff finished 17th with a time of 13.77 and Hall finished 23rd with a time of 13.82. Both will compete tomorrow at 6:20 p.m. Mountain.

Eastern Washington’s Jordan Arakawa, Catie Arrigoni, Montana State’s Grant Grosvenor, Northern Arizona’s Caleb Hoover, Deante Kemper and Southern Utah’s Kayla Kovar all qualified for the NCAA Championships.

Arakawa qualified in the hammer by finishing 12th with a toss of 202-4. Arrigoni qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:14.99 to finish 12th.

Grosvenor qualified in the 800 meters by finishing 10th with a time of 1:49.02. Hoover punched his ticket to Eugene by finishing ninth in the steeplechase with a time of 8:47.09. Kemper qualified in the high jump by finishing tied for ninth with a mark of 7-1. 

Kovar has now qualified for the NCAA Championship in two events. Today, she qualified in the discus with a toss of 174-4 to finish 10th. Yesterday, she also finished 10th but in the shot put with a toss of 52-11 1/2. Tomorrow at 9 a.m. Mountain she will compete in her final event the hammer throw. Kovar is just the second Big Sky athlete to compete in three events at the NCAA Championship.

On Thursday, two other Big Sky athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships. EWU’s Emma Murrillo and Weber State’s Tiffany Hellstrom. Murrillo finished 10th in the javelin with a mark of 156-11 and Hellstrom was 11th with a throw of 156-8. Going into the meet, Murrillo was ranked 24th and Hellstrom was ranked 23rd.

Three other athletes had already punched their ticket to the NCAA Championship. Montana’s Lindsey Hall and Montana State’s Carley McCutchen will compete in the heptathlon and Montana State’s Jeff Mohl will compete in the decathlon.

The NCAA West Preliminary Round will close on Saturday at 9 a.m. Mountain with the women’s hammer. Running events will begin at 5 p.m. Mountain with the 4x100-meter relay.
