OGDEN, Utah (April 8, 2014) – With two weeks left in the 2014 men’s and women’s tennis seasons, the Weber State men and the Sacramento State women top the Big Sky tennis standings. The Weber State men have an 8-0 league record and the Sacramento State women have a 7-0 record.
The Weber State men defeated Montana 5-2 in its only match of the weekend. The Wildcat men are the only men’s team to have clinched a spot in the Big Sky Championship. The Montana men faced Weber State, UNLV and Idaho State. The Grizzlies lost to UNLV and Weber State and defeated Idaho State 5-2. The Northern Arizona men went 2-0 over the weekend after defeating Grand Canyon and Sacramento State 4-3. The Sacramento State men went 2-1 against conference opponents after defeating North Dakota 6-1, Northern Colorado 4-3, and falling to Northern Arizona. The Eastern Washington men defeated Portland State 4-3.
The Sacramento State women lost two non-conference matches against ranked opponents over the weekend after falling to No. 63 UC Irvine and to No. 42 Saint Mary’s, 4-1. The Montana women went 1-2 over the weekend after losing to No. 30 Utah, 7-0, and to Utah State 4-3. The Montana women defeated Eastern Washington 7-0 to clinch a spot in the women’s championship. The Montana State women defeated Eastern Washington 6-1 in its only match of the weekend. The Northern Arizona women went 2-1, earning conference wins over Weber State by a score of 4-1 and Idaho State, 4-0, to clinch a spot in the women’s championship. The NAU women also faced Utah State and lost 4-1. The Northern Colorado women defeated North Dakota 6-1 in its only match of the weekend, to clinch a spot in the championship. The North Dakota women also faced Air Force and lost 7-0. The Idaho State women went 1-1 after losing to NAU and defeating Southern Utah, 4-2. The Weber State women also went 1-1 after falling to NAU, 4-1 and defeating Southern Utah 4-3 for its first conference win of the season. The Portland State women lost to Boise State 7-0 and defeated the College of Idaho 7-0.
With the championship two weeks away, the Weber State men have clinched a spot in the men’s tennis championship. The Sacramento State, Montana, Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona women have all clinched a spot in the women’s tennis championship. The top six teams from both the men’s and women’s regular season standings will advance to the championship, which is April 25-27 in Sacramento, Calif.
