OGDEN, Utah (April 29, 2014) - Portland State’s Kailin Downs has been selected by her peers as the 2013-14 Big Sky Conference Golf Coach of the Year.

Downs, in her first season with the Vikings, guided her squad to the Big Sky Conference Championship last week in Chandler, Ariz. It was the seventh Big Sky Conference championship for the program.

Downs took over her duties at Portland State in late September after serving five seasons as an assistant coach at Oregon State.

In her second week at Portland State, the Vikings won the team title at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State.

Portland State averages 303 strokes per round, which is on pace to set the school record. The Vikings are ranked 101st by Golf Week, and 104th by Golfstat.

Downs played collegiately at New Mexico, where she was a two-time All-American, and a two-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Year. She played two seasons on the LPGA developmental tour and the Cactus Tour.

Downs will lead the Vikings in the NCAA West Regional May 8-10 at the Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Wash.
