OGDEN, Utah (April 15, 2014) – With one more week of competition before the championship, the Montana women and the Weber State men’s tennis teams remain undefeated atop the Big Sky standings.
 
Over the weekend, the Montana women had arguably their best weekend in program history.  On Friday, the UM women defeated Sacramento State, 4-3, ending the Hornets’ 112-match winning streak against Big Sky opponents.  Before the loss to Montana, the last time the Sacramento State women lost to a Big Sky opponent was on April 14, 2001.  The Montana women also defeated Northern Colorado, 7-0, to clinch the No. 1 seed in the championship.  The Montana State women went 2-0 over the weekend after defeating Sacramento State, 4-3 and Northern Colorado, 5-2.  The Northern Arizona women defeated Sacramento State 6-1 in its only match of the weekend.  The Southern Utah women went 2-1 over the weekend after falling to UNLV, 7-0 the Thunderbirds defeated Seattle and Eastern Washington, 5-2. The Portland State women defeated Weber State 4-3, in its only match of the weekend.  The WSU women also faced Eastern Washington and won, 4-3.  After the loss to Montana, the Sacramento State women lost to Montana State and to Northern Arizona.
 
The Weber State men defeated Southern Utah, 7-0 in its only match of the weekend.  With the win, the Wildcat men have clinched the No. 1 seed in the championship and at the very least, a share of the regular-season title.  The Montana men earned two conference wins after defeating Northern Colorado 5-2 and North Dakota 7-0.  These two wins clinched a postseason berth for the Grizzlies. The Montana State men also went 2-0 in conference over the weekend after defeating North Dakota 6-1 and Northern Colorado 5-2.  The two conference wins helped MSU clinch a spot in the championship.  The Northern Arizona men earned two conference wins after defeating Eastern Washington, 4-3 and Portland State, 5-2. These two wins clinched a postseason berth for the Lumberjack men. The Idaho State men earned a conference win after defeating Southern Utah 7-0. In its only match of the weekend, the Sacramento State men lost to Fresno State 5-0.  Because of the results of other matches in the conference, the Hornet men have clinched a spot in the championship.  The Eastern Washington men went 1-1 over the weekend after defeating Southern Utah 7-0 and falling to NAU 4-3.  The Portland State men lost both matches over the weekend after losing to Seattle, 6-1 and falling to NAU 5-2.
 
With the championship a week away, the Weber State, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona and Sacramento State men have all clinched a spot in the men’s tennis championship with one spot remaining.  The only seed that has been set is Weber State as the No. 1 seed.  The Idaho State, Portland State, North Dakota and Southern Utah men have been mathematically eliminated from a postseason berth.
 
On the women’s side, the Montana, Northern Arizona, Sacramento State and Northern Colorado women have all clinched a spot in the women’s tennis championship with two spots remaining.  The Montana women are the No. 1 seed, the Northern Arizona women are the No. 2 seed, and the Sacramento State women are the No. 3 seed.  The final three seeds have yet to be determined.  The Southern Utah, Idaho State, Weber State and Eastern Washington women have been mathematically eliminated from a postseason berth.
 
The top six teams from both the men’s and women’s regular season standings will advance to the championship, which is April 25-27 in Sacramento, Calif.
