OGDEN, Utah (April 1, 2014) – With three weeks left in the 2014 men’s and women’s tennis seasons, the Weber State men and the Sacramento State women top the Big Sky tennis standings. Each team has a 7-0 Big Sky conference record.
The Weber State men went 2-2 over the weekend. The Wildcats defeated Sacramento State, 5-2 and Montana State, 4-3, to clinch a spot in the 2014 Big Sky tennis championship. The Weber State men also faced Utah State and lost 5-2 and lost to Loyola Marymount 5-2. The Montana men went 2-0 over two conference opponents after defeating Southern Utah 7-0 and Northern Arizona 6-1. The Portland State men went 3-1 over the weekend after defeating Creighton and Nebraska-Omaha 4-3. The Vikings also defeated North Dakota 4-2 and lost to South Dakota State 5-0.
The Sacramento State women went 2-2 over the weekend. The Hornet women lost to UC Santa Barbara 5-2 and No. 56 Long Beach State, 6-1. The Sacramento State women also earned two conference wins after defeating Northern Colorado and North Dakota 7-0. These two wins give SAC 112 straight wins over Big Sky opponents, as well as a spot in the 2014 Big Sky tennis championship. The Montana women went 2-0 over the weekend after defeating Idaho State 5-2 and Weber State 7-0. The Southern Utah women won its only match of the weekend after defeating Seattle 4-3. The Thunderbirds were scheduled to host Air Force but that match was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Idaho State women went 2-2 over the weekend after defeating Seattle, 5-2 and Montana State, 4-3. The Bengal women lost to Air Force 4-0 and to Montana 5-2.
The Sacramento State men went 1-1 over the weekend after defeating Eastern Washington 6-1, and falling to Weber State 5-2. The Montana State men went 1-1 over the weekend after defeating Idaho State 5-0 and losing to Weber State 4-3. The Idaho State men lost both matches over the weekend, falling to Seattle 5-2, and Montana State 5-0. The North Dakota men lost both matches over the weekend after losing to St. Cloud State 4-3, and Portland State 4-2. The Eastern Washington men lost both matches over the weekend after losing to Sacramento State 6-1 and Washington 7-0.
The North Dakota women went 1-1 over the weekend after defeating Saint Cloud State 7-0 and losing to Sacramento State. The Montana State women went 1-2 over the weekend, earning a 4-3 conference win over Weber State and losing to Utah State and Idaho State. The Eastern Washington women lost to Pacific at UC Davis 7-0. The Weber State women lost to Air Force, Montana State and Montana. The Northern Arizona women lost its only match of the weekend falling 7-0 to future Big Sky member, Idaho.
