The Sports Network named DeAndre Carter a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, it was announced today. The award is presented annually to the top offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision.

This season, Carter has set Sacramento State single-season records with 90 receptions and 16 receiving touchdowns. He enters the Causeway Classic with 1,200 yards and needs 79 yards to set the school single-season record.

Earlier this season, Carter was named the FCS Offensive Player of the Week after catching 16 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns against Southern Utah. His receptions and yardage total were the most in Sacramento State history.

This past weekend, Carter earned the Big Sky Specials Teams Player of the Week honor based on his 65-yard punt return for a touchdown which broke a 41-41 tie to give the team the victory over Portland State.

The San Jose, Calif., native is one of 25 student-athletes nominated for the award. Fred Amey (2004) was the last Sacramento State player on the ballot.

Carter needs 10 catches to become the second player in league history to haul in 100 passes in a season.

Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams, Idaho State quarterback Justin Arias, Eastern Washington wide receiver Cooper Kupp, and Montana State quarterback Dakota Prukop are also nominees for Walter Payton Award.

Arias leads the nation in passing yards and passing touchdowns. Despite missing four games with an injury, Adams has thrown 28 touchdown passes, and is averaging 366.7 passing yards per game, 397.7 yards of total offense per game, and has an efficiency rating of 179.5

Voting for the Walter Payton Award, the Buck Buchanan Award, the Jerry Rice Award, and the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award begins on Sunday.
