OGDEN, Utah (August 27, 2013) - The 2013 Big Sky soccer season opened last week, with all 10 teams in action.  Over the weekend, the conference went 5-10-3 against many quality teams.
 
Idaho State, the reigning Big Sky tournament champions, started the season off with two wins.  On Friday, Idaho State beat Boise State 2-1 in overtime.  The Bengals scored seven minutes into the first overtime, after Amanda Ellsworth scored off of a rebound 3 yards in front of the goal.  On Sunday, ISU defeated Idaho 2-0 with goals from Jessica Sanchez in the 39th minute and from Ellsworth in the 41st minute. 
 
Northern Arizona also started the season off with two wins for the first time since 2001.  On Friday, Northern Arizona defeated Long Beach State 1-0 after Malia Tano scored a minute into the second half.  On Sunday, the Lumberjacks held a 3-0 lead over Lamar, with goals from Jordan Stenger, Lindsay Doyle and Haley Wingender.  Lamar scored back to back goals in the 87th and 89th minutes to put the final score at 3-2.
 
Weber State went 1-0-1 over the weekend with a 3-0 win over Idaho and a 1-1 draw to UC Santa Barbara.  On Friday, WSU beat Idaho 3-0 with goals from Stacy Bair in the 25th minute, Sarah Thurston in the 66th minute and Mackenzie Day in the 82nd minute.  On Monday, Weber State’s Mackenzie Harrison scored in the 20th minute.  UCSB found the equalizer in the 59th minute.  In the 61st minute, UCSB had a chance to take the lead as it drew a penalty kick.  WSU’s Ryann Waldman made the save to keep the score 1-1. 
 
Over the weekend, Montana hosted the Montana Kickoff Invitational, earning two ties against Air Force and Wyoming.  On Friday, UM’s Ashley Robertson scored in the 63rd minute to give Montana the 1-0 lead.  Less than five minutes later, Air Force found the equalizer to put the score at 1-1.  After almost another hour of scoreless action, the match ended in a 1-1 tie.  On Sunday, despite the 16 shots for Montana and the 17 shots for Wyoming, after 110 minutes of soccer, neither team found the back of the net.  The match ended in a 0-0 tie.
 
Southern Utah traveled to Cal State Bakersfield for its match on Friday.  Despite SUU’s Sabrina Hernandez scoring the first goal of the match, the Thunderbirds lost 4-1.  CSUB’s Erica Shelton recorded a hat trick in the match.
 
Sacramento State traveled across the river to UC Davis for its match on Friday.  The Hornets lost 1-0.  Eastern Washington hosted Gonzaga and Seattle over the weekend.  EWU lost 1-0 to Gonzaga and 2-0 to Seattle. 
 
Portland State faced Oregon and No. 14 Marquette over the weekend.  On Friday, the Vikings lost 3-0 to Oregon.  On Sunday, PSU’s Emma Cooney scored the first goal of the match in the 52nd minute.  Marquette then scored three goals in a row before PSU’s Cori Bianchini scored in the 90th minute to put the final score at 3-2.
 
North Dakota traveled to West Lafayette, Ind., as it played in the Boilermaker Challenge Cup.  UND lost 3-0 to Xavier and 4-1 to Akron.  UND’s lone goal scorer was Zoe Foster.  Over the weekend, Northern Colorado competed for the Colorado Cup playing against in-state rivals University of Colorado and Denver University.  Northern Colorado lost both matches 3-0.
