Five Athletes Punch Tickets To NCAA Championship

Northern Arizona’s Lauren Stuart, Deante Kemper, Rochelle Kanuho, Northern Colorado’s Trevor Evanson and Southern Utah’s Nate Jewkes have all punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.
Stuart had a hammer throw of 198-9 to finish 12th at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on Thursday. Evanson finished tied for first place in the high jump with a jump of 7-1, and NAU’s Kemper finished tied for ninth with a mark of 6-11 1/2.
In the 10,000 meters, Jewkes finished sixth with a time of 30:07.04. For the women, Kanuho finished 11th with a time of 35:13.15.
The NCAA West Preliminary Rounds continue on Friday starting at 11 a.m. with the women’s discus. Running events begin at 5:00 p.m. with the women’s 100-meter hurdles.
Four athletes qualified for the quarterfinal rounds of their events. Montana’s Kourtney Danreuther finished 19th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.92. Also for the women, Portland State’s Bianca Martin qualified in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:24.45 to finish 23rd.
For the men, Weber State’s Isaac Akers qualified for the 400-meter hurdles to finish 23rd with a time of 52.14. NAU’s Nathan Weitz qualified in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:48.32 to finish 23rd. Montana State’s Grant Grosvenor finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:49.58. His teammate Matthew Tex also qualified with a 15th place finish with a time of 1:49.94.
