OGDEN, Utah (August 28, 2012) – With week two of the 2011 season in the books, Idaho State tops the Big Sky standings with a 3-0 record.
On Saturday, Idaho State beat Minot State 4-0 with two goals from Rachel Strawn. ISU’s Amanda Ellsworth and Allyson Stainbrook also tallied a goal each. For the second season in a row, Idaho State is 3-0.
North Dakota scored eight goals and went 1-0-1 over the weekend. On Friday, UND outshot Minnesota, Crookston 21-1 and UND came out with a 4-0 win. On Sunday, UND and South Dakota ended in a 4-4, 2OT tie.
After being down 2-0 for 65 minutes of the game, Northern Colorado scored two unanswered goals to tie Colorado College, 2-2 in double overtime. NC’s Brittany Dunn scored in the 65th minute followed by Madison Yoswa in the 69th minute. The match then headed into overtime but neither team scored the golden goal.
Sacramento State hosted in-state rivals UC Davis and Cal Poly. On Friday, SAC and UC Davis played an even match. After 110 minutes of play, the match ended in a 0-0 tie. On Sunday, despite both teams having 13 shots, Cal Poly beat Sacramento State 4-1.
Over the weekend, Portland State faced two Pac-12 opponents, Oregon State and Oregon. On Friday, PSU’s Kayla Henningsen scored the first goal of the match in the ninth minute. Despite PSU holding the lead for most of the match and outshooting its opponent 8-6, OSU scored two unanswered goals in the 72nd and 73rd minutes to give OSU the 2-1 win. On Sunday, Oregon scored the game-winning goal in the 50th minute. Despite PSU outshooting its opponent 14-8, PSU never found the equalizer.
Northern Arizona also faced two Pac-12 opponents, Arizona State and Arizona. On Friday, NAU lost 4-0 to ASU in front of a Lumberjack Stadium record crowd. NAU held ASU at the half to a 1-0 score. ASU scored three goals in the second half to give them the 4-0 win. On Sunday, NAU lost to Arizona 3-0.
The University of Montana traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, for the TCU Invitational. On Friday, UM faced host TCU. TCU scored the only goal of the match in 54th minute which proved to be enough to get the 1-0 win for TCU. UM outshot TCU 12-11 but never found the equalizer. On Sunday, Montana faced unbeaten Texas Tech. Texas Tech’s Jessica Fuston scored a hat trick which lead the Red Raiders to a 4-0 win over Montana.
Southern Utah traveled up north to play Utah. At the half, the match was tied 0-0. In the 57th minute, Utah got on the board first and scored 4 unanswered goals in 17 minutes. SUU goalkeeper made 12 saves in the 4-0 loss.
Weber State hosted Wyoming in its home opener. Wyoming scored the game-winning in the 49th minute.
Eastern Washington hosted North Dakota State in a 3-2 loss. The Eagles then traveled to Seattle to take on Seattle University and lost 3-0.
