Sacramento State Stuns Oregon State
Sacramento State stunned the college football world Saturday, knocking off Oregon State of the Pac-12, 29-28 in overtime.
Senior wide receiver Brandyn Reed hauled in pass from senior quarterback Jeff Fleming for a 2-point conversion and the victory. That catch came a couple of minutes after the duo hooked up for a 6-yard touchdown reception, cutting Oregon State’s lead to 28-27.
Sacramento State led 21-6 entering the fourth quarter, but the Beavers stormed back to tie the game. Oregon State’s Trevor Romaine missed a 27-yard field-goal at the end of regulation.
The win was Sacramento State’s first over an FBS team. The Hornets had been 0-10 since 2002 against FBS squads. It snapped a 29-game losing streak by Big Sky Conference teams to Pac-12 squads, and a 49-game Big Sky losing streak to FBS teams.
The Big Sky’s last victory over a Pac-12 team came on Sept. 7, 1996, when Montana topped Oregon State 35-14. Saturday’s win marked the Big Sky’s first over an FBS team since Montana State beat Colorado 19-10, and Portland State beat New Mexico 17-6 on Sept. 2, 2006.
Fleming completed 22-of-35 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns. Reed and Chase Deadder both hauled in two touchdown passes.
In the second quarter, Deadder and Fleming hooked up for TDs of 19 and 4 yards. Reed caught a 39-yard touchdown from receiver Morris Norrise with 7:40 to play in the third quarter to give the Hornets a 21-6 lead.
Oregon State’s Malcolm Agnew scored on runs of 4 and 17 yards in the fourth quarter to tie the game. Agnew rushed for 223 yards on 33 carries with three touchdowns.
In other Big Sky action early on Saturday, Portland State topped Southern Oregon 52-0, Lindenwood beat Northern Colorado on a last-second field-goal 22-20, Idaho State lost at Washington State 64-21.
Defending national champion Eastern Washington fell just short of getting another win over a Pac-12 team. Washington held on for a 30-27 win over the Eagles.
EWU QB Bo Levi Mitchell completed 39-of-69 passes with three touchdowns and two interceptions. His final pass of the night was intercepted in the end zone with 35 seconds to play.
Eastern Washington rolled up 504 yards of total offense, compared to 250 for Washington. The Eagles tallied 30 first downs to just 14 for Washington. EWU, however, committed four costly turnovers. It was EWU's first loss since falling 30-7 to Montana State on Sept. 25, 2010.
Weber State also fell just short of an FBS win. Wyoming scored with 22 seconds left to edge the Wildcats 32-28 in Laramie. Weber State QB Mike Hoke threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns.
Montana lost at Tennessee 42-16. Arizona beat Northern Arizona 41-10.
