Alyssa Amano scored the game-winning penalty kick for Weber State
GREELEY, Colo. (Nov. 4) – After 110 minutes of scoreless play, the first semifinal of the Big Sky women’s soccer championship ended with a Weber State win in a sudden victory shootout Friday.
Weber State (6-10-2) will face Montana (6-11-3), which also won in a shootout on Friday, in Sunday's championship match at 1 p.m. Mountain. The championship can be viewed for free on Big Sky TV.
The entire match between PSU and WSU was a defensive battle. Portland State ended the match with 12 shots on goal and Weber State ended with six shots on goal. Despite all of the shots, at the end of regulation the match was tied 0-0. Each team had their chance to end the game in the overtime periods, but neither team found the back of the net. The match headed into a shootout, a Weber State 4-3 win.
The shootout went to the seventh kicker. After the first five kickers, the score was tied 3-3. Portland State’s keeper, Melissa Ferguson, made two saves against Victoria Anderson and Abbey Kennedy. Weber State’s keeper, Ryann Waldman, had made one save against Ariana Cooley.
Portland State’s Amanda Dutra, Carlie Martin, and Teal Sigler made their shots. Weber State’s Sarah Mager, Jessie Baddley and Collette Simmons each made their shots.
With the score tied 3-3 after the first five kickers, the match headed into a sudden victory shootout. Portland State’s Michelle Hlasnik missed her shot to give WSU the chance to win in the sixth round. WSU’s Ryley Hansen missed her shot to keep the score tied at 3-3. PSU’s Toni Carnovale missed her shot to give WSU another chance to win. WSU’s Alyssa Amano made her shot to give the Wildcats the victory over Portland State and a spot in the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 6.
Weber State is in the championship match for the first time since 2008. The Wildcats will be seeking their fifth Big Sky championship.
