Portland State was led by Megan Ellis who had a double-double with 17 points and 13 digs. PSU will compete tomorrow against Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. PST.
NC, PSU Move On To Championship
At the 2011 Big Sky Conference Volleyball Championship on Friday, Northern Colorado and Portland State will move on to the championship match on Saturday at 7 p.m. PST. This will be the third time in three years PSU and NC will meet in the championship match.
Northern Colorado defeated Eastern Washington 3-0 (29-27, 25-18, 25-18) and Portland State defeated Sacramento State 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-19).
Northern Colorado was led by Kelley Arnold, who recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs. Tambre Whaddock added 10 kills. Marissa Hughes had 40 assists for the match and Amanda Arterburn added 18 digs. Eastern Washington was led by Shelby Puckett who had 14 kills and Cora Kellerman added 10. Laney Brown had a double-double with 18 kills and 10 digs and Lindsey Petroni added 15 digs.
In the first set, Northern Colorado had an early four-point lead and kept the lead before EWU tied the set at 18 and took its first lead with a kill by Kellerman but NC had an answer. The set was finally tied for the last time at 27 before the Bears ended the set with a kill by Williams and an attack error on EWU.
In the second set, EWU took the first lead and had a two-point lead at 10-8 before the Bears went on a little run and tied the set at 12. NC went on a couple of runs and their was no looking back. The Bears ended the set on a 13-6 run.
In the third and final set, it was all Northern Colorado, who had a eight-point lead at 18-10. Eastern Washington was able to come within six at 21-15 but NC had an answer and went on a 6-3 run to end the set and the match.
Portland State was led by Megan Ellis who had a double-double with 17 points and 13 digs. Garyn Schlatter added 35 assists in 17 digs in the match and Nicole Bateham added 29 digs. Sacramento State was led by Eryn Kirby who had a double-double with 16 points and 10 digs and Kelsey Elston added 11 kills. Breanne Menees recorded 25 digs.
In the first set, the set was tied at 16 before SAC took a two-point lead with a serving ace from Hannah Hettinga and a kill by Olivia Moss. PSU answered back but the Hornets kept the lead and finished the set on a 7-5 run. SAC won the set 25-21.
In the second set, the set was tied at eight before PSU went on a little run. SAC was able to come within one at 15-14 and soon tied the match at 22. But the Vikings ended the set with a kill from Aubrey Mitchell and an attack error by Kirby and Elston. PSU won the set 25-22.
In the third set, the set was tied at four before PSU went on a 4-0 run. SAC was able to come within three at 20-17 but that wasn’t enough as the Vikings ended the set on a 5-2 run to win the set 25-19.
In the fourth set, the set was tied at seven before PSU went on a 9-2 run to take a 16-9 lead. PSU kept adding points and little runs. SAC was able to come within four but that wasn’t enough as PSU won the set 25-19.
