OGDEN, UTAH (Oct. 24, 2011) - The Big Sky Conference has selected its football Players of the Week for games played on Saturday, Oct. 22. Eastern Washington wide receiver Nicholas Edwards is the offensive Player of the Week. Montana defensive tackle Bryan Waldhauser and Montana State defensive tackle Zach Minter are the co-defensive Players of the Week. Eastern Washington kicker Mike Jarrett is the special teams Player of the Week.
Edwards, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound junior from Tacoma, Wash., caught 11 passes for 192 yards with four touchdowns in Eastern Washington’s 42-35 overtime victory over Sacramento State. Edwards hauled in TD passes of 35, 16, 39 and 22 yards. Three of his TDs came in the third quarter as Eastern rallied from a 28-13 deficit. He caught a 16-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 28-20. Less than two minutes later, he caught a 39-yard scoring pass that tied the game at 28-28. He added a 22-yard scoring reception from Bo Levi Mitchell with 55 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 35-35. He also caught a 17-yard pass in overtime to set up Jordan Talley’s game-winning score. This is Edwards’ first player of the week award. Edwards was also named the national co-offensive player of the week by The Sports Network.
Waldhauser, a 6-4, 270-pound senior from Worden, Mont., tallied 10 tackles – eight solo – 2.5 sacks and four tackles for loss in Montana’s 28-24 win over Northern Arizona. Waldhauser had 1.5 sacks during the course of three plays late in the third quarter wit the Grizzlies clinging to a 21-14 lead. The sacks led to an NAU punt. His final sack clinched the Montana win, as he brought down Cary Grossart at the NAU 48-yard line with 1:02 remaining to play on fourth down. This is Waldhauser’s second career Player of the Week honor.
Minter, a 6-1, 285-pound junior from Glendale, Ariz., tallied a season-high seven solo tackles with three tackles for loss and two sacks in Montana State’s 31-21 road win over Northern Colorado. Minter’s second sack came on a shutdown drive after the Bobcats mid-fourth quarter score expanded the team’s lead to 31-21. Minter helped the Bobcat defense limit Northern Colorado to 88 rushing yards. This is Minter’s third career Player of the Week award.
Jarrett, a 5-9, 165-pound senior from Puyallup, Wash., connected on field goals of 41 and 28 yards and made six extra points in Eastern Washington’s 42-35 overtime win over Sacramento State. Both of his field goals came in the second quarter as the Eagles’ closed within 14-13. Jarrett has made 14-of-16 field goals this season, and needs just one more to set the single-season record for field goals. This is Jarrett’s first career Player of the Week honor.
