OGDEN, UTAH (Oct. 10, 2011) - The Big Sky Conference has selected its football Players of the Week for games played on Saturday, Oct. 8. Walter Payton Award candidates DeNarius McGhee of Montana State and Bo Levi Mitchell of Eastern Washington are the co-offensive Players of the Week. Sacramento State linebacker Todd Davis is the defensive Player of the Week. Montana kicker/punter Brody McKnight is the special teams Player of the Week.
McGhee, a 5-foot-11, 213-pound sophomore quarterback from Euless, Texas completed 15-of-22 passes for 255 yards and four touchdowns in Montana State’s 38-36 road win over Portland State. He also rushed for a score, accounting for all five Bobcat touchdowns. McGhee averaged 17 yards per completion, throwing TD passes of 5, 6, 24 and 69 yards. He also scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter. He had an efficiency rating of 225.5.
Mitchell, a 6-2, 210-pound senior quarterback from Katy, Texas, completed 27-of-40 passes for 356 yards and three touchdowns, and also ran for a touchdown in Eastern Washington’s 36-28 victory over Northern Arizona. Mitchell accounted for all but 34 of EWU’s 390 yards of offense. Mitchell tossed TD passes of 7, 51 and 61 yards during a turnover-free game. He also scored on an 8-yard run early in the fourth quarter to put the Eagles up 33-21. Mitchell had an efficiency rating of 167.
Davis, a 6-1, 230-pound sophomore from Palmdale, Calif., tied for the team high with 10 tackles, including a team-high 2.5 for loss in Sacramento State’s 14-0 victory over Northern Colorado. Led by Davis, the Hornets limited Northern Colorado to just 72 yards of total offense, and held the Bears’ ground game to 0.9 yards per rush. It was the first shutout posted by Sacramento State since 1994.
McKnight, a 6-foot, 204-pound senior from Vancouver, B.C.., connected on fields goals of 51, 48, 44 and 42 yards in Montana’s 33-0 win over Idaho State. He finished the game with 15 points as he also made three extra points. McKnight also averaged 42.2 yards on six punts with a long of 61 and two inside the 20-yard line. He also recovered a fumble.
