Stanford, CA – The Portland State women’s golf team finished its season on Saturday, placing 20th at the NCAA West Regional Championship after shooting scores of 309-317-316=942.

Seventh-ranked Arizona hung on to win the West Regional by nine shots over top-ranked UCLA. The Wildcats shot 291-294-291=876 over three days at Stanford Golf Course. UCLA was at 292-296-297=885.

Those two teams, along with Alabama, Texas, Virginia, Stanford, San Jose State and Texas A&M advance to the NCAA National Championship Tournament, May 19-22, at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, NC.

There were co-medalists at the West Regional as Callie Nielson of Virginia and Madeleine Ziegert of San Jose State finished at one-over par 214. Nielson shot on even par 71 on the final day, while Ziegert, who held the lead going into Friday’s play, shot 73.

Freshman Britney Yada led Portland State, shooting 78-75-76=229 to tie for 49th. Yada, who was 75th after the first round, moved up 26 spots on the leaderboard. Her finish ties for second-best ever at a West Regional by a Viking. Rebecca Randolph tied for 48th in 2003, and Alexia Brown tied for 49th in 2008.

Sophomore Tiffany Schoning tied for 72nd among 122 golfers, shooting 76-80-77=233 over the three-day, 54-hole event.

Senior Stephanie Johns came in tied for 96th at 78-78-83=239. Junior Kalyn Dodge tied for 104th at 77-84-80=241.

PSU’s 20th place finish marked the third time in five West Regionals that the Viking team placed 20th. PSU’s best-ever finish was 16th in 2003. The 942 team total is also the third-best score among five regionals. It was a solid effort as the team had only four available competitors, rather than five, and thus could not throw out a high score.
