Portland State was one shot better than Northern Arizona on Tuesday during the second round of the 2010 Big Sky Conference Golf Championship presented by Black Clover. On Monday it was the other way around, meaning the teams are tied entering Wednesday's final round.
Portland State shot a 296 on Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 591. Northern Arizona fired a 297 after a 294 on Monday at the Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler. The 591s are the fourth-lowest 36-hole team total in tournament history.
Northern Arizona freshman Stephanie Kim is on her way to smashing the Big Sky individual 54-hole tournament record. The Phoenix, Ariz., native, shot a two-under-par 70 and is five-under-par after 36 holes. The league's Player and Freshman of the Year holds a six-shot lead over teammate Megan Buck.
Kim played a bogey-free round and carded two birdies. Kim's 36-hole total of 139 is a tournament record, breaking the previous mark of 140 set by Sacamento State's Margaux Sheehan in 2007.
Kim is on the verge of becoming the first player in league history to finish under par in the championship. The best winning score is an even-par 216 recorded by Sheehan in 2007 and NAU's Lauren Gray in 2004.
Freshman Britney Yada of Portland State is in third place with a three-over-par 147. She shot a 76 following a 71 on Monday. PSU's Kalyn Dodge and Stephanie Johns each shot 73 on Tuesday, while Tiffany Schoning carded a 74.
Buck and Dakin Banta each shot 75 for Northern Arizona's Buck's round was highlighted by an eagle, as she holed out from roughly 125 yards the par-4 15th with a nine-iron.
Sacramento State is also in the hunt for the team title. For the second straight day, the Hornets fired a 299. Brooke Green tallied a 73 on Tuesday, while Kercia Brakel signed for a 74. Samantha Saffold and Julie Shulter both shot 76.
Defending individual champion Ali Nelson of Northern Colorado is one of four golfers tied for fourth at 148. Nelson shot a 73 on Tuesday, and is tied with Green, Johns and Saffold.
Wednesday's final round begins at 6:30 a.m. The final grouping of Yada, Green and Kim goes off the first hole at 8:36.
