Eastern Washington’s Marc Hughes has been selected the 2007-08 Big Sky Conference golf Coach of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.
The nine Big Sky Conference coaches voted for the award.
Hughes just completed his 10th season at the helm of the Eagles, and guided his squad through an outstanding regular season. Eastern Washington picked up team victories at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic earlier this month in Chandler, Ariz., and also claimed top prize in the fall at the MDA Invitational.
Eastern Washington averaged a conference-low 305.9 strokes per round during the regular season. Eagles Chloe Nelson, Marli Mikulecky and Kristina Gargaro all earned first team All-Conference honors. Freshman Kellie Holmstedt was named to the second team. Gargaro captured the league’s Freshman of the Year honor.
The Eagles fell short of capturing their first Big Sky Conference Championship, finishing in third place, three shots behind Portland State, and one behind Northern Arizona. Eastern Washington fired a 300 to lead after the first day.
EWU entered the conference championship ranked 96th in the nation, tops among league teams.
This is the first Coach of the Year honor for Hughes, a 1992 graduate of Central Washington.
