McKinney, a 6-foot-1, senior guard from Union City, Calif., averaged 23 points, 8.5 assists, 3.5 steals and two rebounds per game as the Hornets beat Idaho and Eastern Washington to take over first place in the league standings with a 5-1 conference mark. He shot .563 percent from the field, and .545 percent from 3-point range.
In a 79-76 win over Idaho on Thursday, McKinney scored 27 of his 32 points in the second half as the Hornets rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit. He scored 21 of Sacramento State’s first 26 points in the second half. He made 12-of-19 field goals, connected on 5-of-7 from 3-point range, and 3-of-5 from the free-throw line. He also had five assists, three rebounds, a block and a steal. His 32 points tied a career-high, and his five 3-pointers were a career-high.
On Saturday, McKinney scored 14 points with 12 assists, six steals, and a rebound as the Hornets handed Eastern Washington its first conference loss with a 90-77 win. McKinney’s 12 assists were a career-high, and the most by a Big Sky player this season.
This is McKinney’s second Player of the Week honor this season, and the fourth of his career.
