Eastern Washington’s Marissa Borja has been selected as the Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week after finishing in third place at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate.

Borja, a sophomore from Spring Valley, Calif., opened play with a four-over-par 76. She followed with a three-under-par 69 and closed with a 73 to finish with a two-over-par 218. Borja’s 69 was a career-low, and tied for the low round in the tournament.

The tournament was held Oct. 12-13 at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.

Borja was the low Big Sky golfer in a field that included seven league teams. Cal State Fullerton won the 20-team tournament with a 54-hole total of 909. Clariss Guce of Cal State Northridge and Cal Poly’s Taylor Yoshitake tied for first at 213.

“I’m so proud of Marissa,” said EWU coach Brenda Howe. “For the second time this season, she positioned herself to possibly win a tournament and showed maturity that is great to see in a sophomore.”

Borja helped Eastern Washington to a 15th-place finish. The Eagles shot rounds of 319, 308 and 314 for a 941.

This is Borja’s first career Golfer of the Week honor.
