CHENEY, Wash. (November 6, 2016) – Eastern Washington captured its first Big Sky Conference soccer championship in a penalty-kick thriller on Sunday afternoon in Cheney, Wash. The No. 5 seed Eagles and No. 3 seed Northern Arizona battled to a 1-1 tie through 110 minutes but EWU edged the Lumberjacks 4-3 in penalty kicks to win the 2016 Big Sky Conference Soccer Championship presented by Red Lion Hotels.
Eastern Washington will find out who its NCAA tournament opponent will be tomorrow as the NCAA hosts the 2016 women’s soccer selection show at 4:30 p.m. Eastern on NCAA.com.
NAU got on the board in the 41
st minute when Ali Lixandru converted a penalty kick. EWU equalized in the 49
th minute when All-Tournament selection, Jenny Chavez volleyed a shot past NAU goalkeeper Meghan Dickmann.
In the penalty shootout EWU goalkeeper, Mallory Taylor rejected the Lumberjacks’ first attempt and Laci Rennaker put a shot into the net that gave the Eagles the 4-3 edge in penalties.
This is the Eagles’ first Big Sky Conference championship. Eagle junior, Chloe Williams was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
