OGDEN, Utah (September 23, 2014) – With the 2014 Big Sky soccer conference season starting on Friday, Northern Arizona tops the standings with a 4-3-1 record.
In Northern Arizona’s only match of the weekend, the Lumberjacks defeated UTEP 1-0 in double overtime. Fifty-three seconds into the second overtime, NAU’s Haley Wingender scored the game-winning goal.
Northern Colorado went 1-0-1 over the weekend, tying Wyoming and defeating Bryant, both in double overtime. After 110 minutes on Friday, the Bears played to a scoreless draw with Wyoming. On Sunday, Bryant scored the first goal of the match in the 49th minute. UNC tied up the match after a goal from Carolyn Cox in the 62nd minute. Bryant again took the lead after a goal in the 76th minute. Adrienne Jordan scored the game-tying goal for the Bears in the 84t h minute to send the match into overtime. In the second overtime the Bears’ Paige Morris scored the game-winning goal to give Northern Colorado the 3-2 win.
Over the weekend, Montana hosted the Montana Invitational with Eastern Washington, Colorado State and Hawaii. On Friday, UM faced Colorado State and defeated the Rams 2-0. Tyler Adair and Hallie Widner recorded the goals for the Grizzlies. On Sunday, Montana fell to Hawaii 2-1. Fifty-eight minutes in, Hawaii took a 2-0 lead. UM’s Brooke Moody cut Hawaii’s lead in half with a goal in the 65th minute.
Sacramento State went 1-1 over the weekend, falling to UC Santa Barbara and defeating Fresno State. On Friday, the Hornets lost to UCSB 2-0. On Sunday, Fresno State opened up the scoring with a goal in the 44th minute. SAC’s Lydia Bowman equalized the match with a goal in the 51st minute. The Hornets’ Kylee Smith scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute to give Sacramento State the 2-1 win.
Eastern Washington traveled to Missoula, Mont., for the Montana Invitational. On Friday, Eastern Washington lost to Hawaii 3-1. Chloe Williams scored the lone goal for the Eagles. On Sunday, EWU defeated Colorado State 2-0. Freshman Savannah Hoekstra recorded both goals for the Eagles.
Portland State lost its only match of the weekend, falling to San Jose State 1-0. SJSU scored the only goal of the match in the 86th minute.
North Dakota lost its only match of the weekend 5-1 to South Dakota. Zoe Foster recorded the lone goal for UND.
Idaho went 0-2 over the weekend, falling to Grand Canyon and Arizona. The Vandals lost to Grand Canyon 2-1 with the lone UI goal coming off of an own goal. On Sunday, the Vandals lost to Arizona 3-0.
Idaho State lost both of its matches over the weekend. On Thursday, the Bengals lost to Cal State Fullerton 4-1. Amanda Ellsworth recorded the lone goal for ISU. On Sunday, Idaho State lost to San Diego State 3-0.
Weber State lost both of its matches over the weekend, falling to Loyola Marymount 3-1 and Cal State Northridge 4-0. Stacy Bair recorded the lone Wildcat goal over the weekend.
Southern Utah didn’t play last weekend but will return to action on Friday, September 26.
