OGDEN, Utah (September 16, 2014) – With four weeks of the 2014 Big Sky soccer season in the books, Idaho State tops the standings with a 3-2 record.
In Idaho State’s only match over the weekend, the Bengals defeated Hawaii 5-4. ISU was down 2-0 after the first seven minutes. In the 11th minute, ISU’s Katherine Roberts scored to cut Hawaii’s lead in half. In the 14th minute, Amanda Ellsworth tied up the match for the Bengals after converting on a penalty kick. Hawaii took another two goal lead after scoring in the 26th and 57th minutes. Idaho State went on to score three unanswered goals, resulting in the 5-4 win. Ellsworth finished with a hat trick
Portland State won its only match of the weekend, defeating Oregon 1-0 in overtime. After a scoreless 90 minutes, Portland State’s Tamia Hasan scored the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute of play. PSU’s Caitlin Plese recorded five saves, including a penalty kick save in the 89th minute, to send the game into overtime
Northern Arizona went 2-0 over the weekend, defeating Wright State and Grand Canyon. On Friday, NAU defeated Wright State 1-0. The Lumberjacks’ goal came in the 29th minute on a penalty kick from Haley Wingender. On Sunday, NAU beat Grand Canyon 2-0 on goals from Anna Goebel and Adrian Nixt.
Southern Utah went 2-0 over the weekend, defeating both Grand Canyon and Wright State in double overtime. On Friday, Southern Utah’s Nancy Brich scored in the 86th minute. Grand Canyon equalized the match in the 88th minute to send the game into overtime. In the second overtime period, SUU’s Abbie Flandro scored the game-winning goal in the 105th minute to give SUU the 2-1 double-overtime win. On Sunday, after 90 scoreless minutes, the match headed into overtime. In the second overtime period, SUU’s Megan Bolding scored the game-winning goal to give the Thunderbirds the 1-0 double-overtime win over Wright State.
Sacramento State went 1-0 over the weekend, defeating Fresno Pacific 2-0. The Hornets’ goals came from Shelby Salvacion in the 50th minute and Kristen Bridges in the 64th minute. The Hornets outshot Fresno Pacific 20-14.
Northern Colorado went 1-1 over the weekend, falling to Iowa State and defeating Nebraska-Omaha. On Friday, the Bears lost to Iowa State 3-0. On Sunday, Northern Colorado’s Juliana Grover scored the first goal of the match in the 21st minute. Omaha equalized the match with a goal in the 49th minute of play. UNC went on to score three unanswered goals, resulting in a 4-1 win for the Bears. Paige Morris scored one of the final three goals for the Bears with Rebecca Lancia scoring the final two.
North Dakota finished the weekend with a 0-1-1 record, falling to Creighton and tying Northern Iowa. On Friday, UND lost to Creighton 3-0. On Sunday, North Dakota found itself trailing 1-0 after a goal from Northern Iowa in the 38th minute. In the 40th minute, UND’s Emily Smithson equalized the match to send it into overtime. After two scoreless 10 minute overtime periods, the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
In Montana’s only match of the weekend, the Grizzlies lost to Missouri 4-3 in double overtime. UM’s Chloe Torres opened up the scoring with a goal in the fifth minute of play. Missouri evened the score at 1-1 with a goal in the 25th minute. Montana took a 3-1 lead after two goals from Tyler Adair and Allie Lucas in the 70th and 71st minutes respectively. Missouri tied up the match at 3-3 with goals in the 77th and 82nd minutes to send the game into overtime. After 10 minutes of scoreless action in the first overtime period, Missouri scored the game-winning goal in the 105th minute.
Weber State went 0-2 over the weekend, falling to Hawaii and UTEP. On Friday, Weber State lost to Hawaii 4-3 in overtime. Hawaii took an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 7th minute of play. In the 24th minute, Stacy Bair converted on a penalty kick for the Wildcats to equalize the match at 1-1. Hawaii took a two goal lead after scoring in the 29th and 32nd minutes. Weber State’s Mackenzie Peck and Mackenzie Harrison scored to tie the match at 3-3 and the send the game into overtime. Thirty seconds into the first overtime period, Hawaii scored the game-winning goal. On Sunday, the Wildcats lost to UTEP 2-1. After trailing 2-0 in the first 50 minutes, WSU’s only goal came from Lana Willard on a penalty kick in the 65th minute.
Idaho went 0-2 over the weekend, falling to Saint Mary’s 3-0 and Washington State 1-0.
Eastern Washington didn’t play last weekend but will return to action on Friday, September 19.
