OGDEN, Utah (August 26, 2014) - The Big Sky Conference has announced its women’s soccer players of the week for matches played from August 22 - August 25. Northern Colorado’s Kassy Castillo has been named the Offensive Player of the Week. Portland State’s Kelsey Henningsen has earned the Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Castillo, a sophomore midfielder from Chula Vista, Calif., had two goals and one assist in Northern Colorado’s 3-2 win over Colorado College. Castillo scored both goals within 10 minutes of each other and then went on to assist Brooke Braden three minutes later for the team’s third goal of the half.
Castillo played a part in all three goals and helped the Bears defeat Colorado College for the first time in 29 years.
In Northern Colorado’s 1-0 loss to Colorado, Castillo recorded one shot on goal.
Kelsey Henningsen, a senior defender from Beaverton, Ore., led the Portland State defense to a big shutout Friday as the Vikings beat Utah Valley 1-0 to break the Big Sky record for the longest unbeaten streak with 14-straight. Henningsen and the Vikings held UVU to just two shots in the win and extended their shutout streak to 478:05.
Boise State ended that shutout streak in a 1-1 draw with PSU on Sunday, but PSU’s unbeaten streak is still alive with 15-straight matches without a loss. Henningsen helped the Vikings come back and tie that match up with an assist on a free kick in the 55th minute. The Broncos also scored on a free kick against the Vikings, leaving Henningsen and the PSU defense spotless in terms of the run of play.
Additionally, Henningsen and the Vikings’ defensive performance against the Broncos extends their streak of not allowing more than one goal in a match, which the Vikings haven’t done in any of their past 18 matches.
