Weekly Recap

OGDEN, Utah (August 26, 2014) – The 2014 Big Sky soccer season opened last week, with all 11 teams in action.  Over the weekend, the conference went 6-11-2 against many quality teams.

Portland State went 1-0-1 over the weekend to extend its record breaking unbeaten streak to 15 matches.  On Friday, the Vikings defeated Utah Valley 1-0 behind Mackenzie Bean’s goal in the 13th minute.  PSU outshot Utah Valley 20-2. On Sunday, PSU tied Boise State 1-1.  Boise State led off the scoring with a goal in the 43rd minute of play.  The Vikings answered back with the equalizer in the 55th minute.

Idaho State defeated Minot State 4-2 in its only match of the weekend.  ISU scored four-straight goals with a brace from Amanda Ellsworth and Maria Sanchez. After the Bengals were up 4-0, Minot State scored in the 69th and 90th minutes.

Northern Colorado finished the weekend with a 1-1 record after defeating Colorado College 3-2 and falling to Colorado 1-0.  On Friday, NC’s Kassy Castillo recorded two goals and an assist to give UNC a 3-0 lead.  Colorado College got within one, but couldn’t find the equalizer.  This is the first time in 29 years that Northern Colorado has defeated Colorado College.  The Bears fell to Colorado on Sunday with the lone goal coming in the 61st minute.

Sacramento State went 1-1 over the weekend after falling to UC Davis 1-0 and defeating Pacific 1-0 in double overtime.  On Friday, UC Davis scored the only goal of the match in the 81st minute. On Sunday, the Hornets bounced back and scored a late goal of its own.  SAC’s Jennifer Lum scored the game winning goal against Pacific in the 110th minute.

Montana went 1-1 over the weekend after defeating Air Force 1-0 and falling to Wyoming 1-0.  On Friday, UM’s Jamie Simon scored the only goal of the match in the 74th minute.  On Sunday, the Grizzlies lost to Wyoming 1-0 after an early goal in the 4th minute of play.

Eastern Washington went 1-1 over the weekend with a 2-1 overtime loss to Fresno State and a 3-0 win over CSU Bakersfield. On Friday against Fresno State, FSU took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.  EWU’s Cassie Black tied up the match with a goal in the 61st minute to send the match into overtime.  In the 100th minute of play the Eagles scored an own goal, resulting in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Bulldogs.  On Sunday Black opened up the scoring with a goal in the 49th minute.  Savannah Hoekstra and Paige Gallaway added another goal each, giving the Eagles the 3-0 win over CSU Bakersfield.

Southern Utah went 0-1-1 over the weekend after tying Dixie State 4-4 and falling to UC Santa Barbara 2-0.  On Friday, Dixie State took a 2-0 lead in the first 21 minutes of play.  SUU’s Shelby Green cut the lead in half with a goal in the 31st minute.  Less than 10 minutes later, Dixie State added another, taking a 3-1 lead heading into the half.  After the break, SUU scored three goals in a row, to take a 4-3 lead.  With less than eight minutes left, Dixie State tied up the match which resulted in the 4-4 draw.  Megan Bolding, Katie Jones and Chandler Yost scored the three SUU goals in the second half.  On Sunday, SUU lost to UCSB 2-0.

North Dakota went 0-1 over the weekend after its second match of the weekend was cancelled due to unplayable field conditions.  On Friday, North Dakota faced in-state rival North Dakota State and lost 1-0.  The only goal of the match came in the 63rd minute of play.

In its only match of the weekend, Weber State lost to Westminster 1-0.  Despite outshooting Westminster 14-9, the Griffins found the back of the net in the 79th minute of play.

In its first matches as a Big Sky member, Idaho went 0-2 over the weekend.  The Vandals lost to Seattle U, 2-1 in overtime and lost to TCU 2-0.  Alyssa Pease scored the only goal for the Vandals.

Northern Arizona went 0-2 over the weekend after losing to UNLV 2-1 and falling to UC Riverside 4-2.  Haley Wingender scored two goals over the weekend for the Lumberjacks.
