OGDEN, Utah (October 28, 2014) – With five games remaining in the 2014 Big Sky soccer conference season, Montana sits atop the standings with a 7-0-2 conference record.
Montana remained unbeaten after going 2-0 over the weekend. After defeating North Dakota 7-0 on Friday, Montana earned the right to host the 2014 Big Sky Championship. UM's Mackenzie Akins scored the first goal of the match in the 15th minute. Brooke Moody, Charlene Burger, Maddy Emerick, Paytyn Wheeler each added a goal for the Grizzlies. Montana's Allie Lucas scored the final two goals of the match. On Sunday, Montana defeated Northern Colorado 1-0. UM's Hallie Widner scored the only goal of the match in the 83rd minute of the match.
In Portland State’s only match over the weekend, the Vikings defeated Idaho 3-1. After defeating Idaho, Portland State clinched a spot in the postseason tournament. PSU's Cori Bianchini scored the first goal of the match in the fourth minute. Katie Forsee doubled the Vikings' lead with a goal in the 59th minute. PSU took a 3-0 lead after Angela Haluska scored in the 63rd minute. Idaho's Olivia Baggerly scored the Vandals' only goal of the match in the 85th minute.
Sacramento State won its third consecutive game after defeating Idaho 4-2 in its only match of the weekend. Idaho took a 2-0 lead after Alyssa Pease scored in the 20th minute and Chloe Bell scored in the 23rd. Sacramento scored four unanswered goals behind Kristen Bridges' hat trick and a goal from Adaurie Dayak.
Northern Colorado went 1-1 over the weekend. On Friday, the Bears defeated Eastern Washington 1-0. UNC's Juliana Grover scored the game-winning goal in the 37th minute. On Sunday, UNC lost to Montana 1-0.
Northern Arizona finished the weekend with a 1-0-1 record. On Friday, NAU and Weber State tied 1-1 in double overtime. Weber State's Marissa Cook scored the first goal of the match in the ninth minute. NAU's Haley Wingender scored the equalizer with four seconds remaining in regulation. After two scoreless overtime periods, the match ended in a 1-1 tie. On Sunday, for the first time since 2005, Northern Arizona defeated Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho. The Lumberjacks defeated the Bengals 2-1. In the 30th minute, NAU's first goal of the match was an own goal that had deflected off of an ISU defender. In the 56th minute, NAU took a 2-0 lead with a goal from Haley Wingender. Idaho State's Allyssa Kenney scored the Bengals' only goal of the match in the 80th minute.
Idaho State went 1-1 over the weekend. On Friday, ISU defeated Southern Utah 2-1. Idaho State's Amanda Ellsworth scored the first goal of the match in the 21st minute. SUU's Nancy Brich equalized the match with a goal in the 61st minute. The Bengals' Allyssa Kenney scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute. Ellsworth is now tied for two Big Sky records. Ellsworth has scored 36 career goals, tying Heather Olson from Montana with the most all-time. And Ellsworth is tied for another Big Sky record with Holly Jones from Northern Arizona with 81 career points. On Sunday, Idaho State lost to Northern Arizona 2-1.
After losing to Idaho State on Friday, Southern Utah defeated Weber State 2-1 in overtime on Sunday. SUU's Logan Harker scored the first goal of the match in the 29th minute. Weber State's Stacy Bair equalized the match with a goal in the 49th minute, which would send the match into overtime. In the first overtime period, SUU's Harker scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute.
On Friday, Eastern Washington fell to Northern Colorado 1-0. On Sunday, the Eagles defeated North Dakota 1-0. After defeating North Dakota, Eastern Washington clinched a spot in the Big Sky championship for the first time since 2009. EWU's Kiana Hafferty scored the only goal of the match in the 21st minute.
The 2014 Big Sky soccer championship will be held Nov. 6, 7, & 9, in Missoula, Mont. Quarterfinals will begin on Nov. 6 with the semifinals on Nov. 7. The championship match is set for Nov. 9.
The top six teams in the conference regular-season standings will advance to the championship. Montana, Portland State, and Eastern Washington have clinched spots in the Big Sky Championship.
North Dakota and Weber State have been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention.
