Weekly Recap
OGDEN, Utah (September 24, 2013) – With non-conference soccer in the books, Weber State and Northern Arizona top the Big Sky standings.
Weber State went 1-0 over the weekend after the Wildcats traveled to Utah State on Sunday. WSU defeated Utah State 1-0 with the lone goal coming in the 47th minute from Stacy Bair.
Northern Arizona suffered its first losses of the season as the Lumberjacks went 0-2 over the weekend. On Friday, NAU lost to UTEP 4-3. After being down 3-1 in the 80th minute, NAU scored two goals to even the game at 3-3 with a little over a minute remaining. UTEP scored the game-winning goal in the 90th minute to give UTEP the 4-3 win. NAU had goals from Shawnee Morgan, Sarah Tarver and Lindsay Doyle. On Sunday, NAU and Hawaii went into overtime after neither team scored in regulation. In the 98th minute, Hawaii scored the game-winning goal to give NAU its second loss of the season.
Northern Colorado went 2-0-1 over the week as they faced Wyoming, UNLV and Stony Brook. On Wednesday, UNC defeated Wyoming 1-0 with the goal coming from Shanlie Anderson in the 42nd. On Friday, the Bears’ Danielle Birdsall scored in the eighth minute, UNLV found the equalizer in the 37th minute. The game headed into overtime and neither team scored which resulted in a 1-1 tie. On Sunday, Northern Colorado defeated Stony Brook 1-0 with the Bears’ goal coming in the 21st minute from Ambree Bellin.
On Friday, Montana defeated Nevada 2-0 in its only match over the weekend. Montana’s goals came almost two minutes apart. The first was from India Watne in the 52nd minute, the second from Maddey Frey in the 54th minute.
In its only match of the weekend, Idaho State defeated Wyoming 1-0 in double overtime. ISU’s Allyson Stainbrook scored the only goal of the match in the 113th minute off of a free kick to give ISU the win.
Sacramento State went 1-0-1 over the weekend. On Friday, the Hornets faced Fresno State. After being down 1-0, SAC’s Rachel Leonard tied the match in the 52nd minute. Less than 30 seconds later, Fresno State scored to regain the one goal lead. In the 73rd minute, SAC’s Jordyn Rolling equalized the match, sending the game into overtime. Neither team scored in overtime, resulting in the 2-2 tie. On Sunday, Sacramento State defeated Pacific 2-1. Both of SAC’s goals came from Alyssa Anderson, in the 17th and 30th minutes.
In Portland State’s only match of the weekend, the Vikings tied San Francisco 0-0. Despite a combined 18 shots, neither team scored which resulted in the 0-0 double overtime tie.
On Friday, Southern Utah defeated UC Riverside 1-0 in overtime. The match remained scoreless in regulation, which sent the game into overtime. In the 97t h minute, SUU’s Shelby Green scored the game-winning goal to give the Tbirds the 1-0 win. On Sunday, SUU lost to UTEP. SUU’s Chandler Yost scored the first goal of the match in the 32nd minute. UTEP scored two unanswered goals to give SUU the 2-1 loss.
Eastern Washington faced Gonzaga, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and North Dakota State. On Tuesday against Gonzaga, EWU lost 3-0. EWU’s goalie, Nathalie Schwery made nine saves in the match. On Friday against SIUE, EWU’s Katie Cashman scored in the 34th minute. SIUE found the equalizer in the 71st minute to send the game into overtime. SIUE scored the game winning goal in the 102nd minute to give SIUE the 2-1, double overtime win over Eastern Washington. On Sunday, EWU defeated North Dakota State 3-0. EWU had goals from Cassie Black and Nicole Medeiros along with an own goal off of NDSU.
On Friday, North Dakota tied South Dakota 2-2. UND’s Robyn Wujkowski and Andrea Hyduke scored the first goals of the match just 40 seconds apart in the 10th minute. South Dakota went on to score two unanswered goals to tie the match at 2-2 after 110 minutes of play. On Sunday, North Dakota lost 6-1 to South Dakota State. UND’s lone goal came in the 37th minute as Kirsten Olson converted on a penalty kick.
