OGDEN, Utah (September 17, 2013) – After a month of competition, Northern Arizona remains unbeaten atop the Big Sky soccer standings with a 4-0-3 record.
Northern Arizona went 1-0-1 over the weekend after defeating Grand Canyon 1-0 on Friday, after a goal in the 29th minute from Sarah Tarver. On Sunday, after being down 1-0 for most of the match, NAU’s Haley Wingender scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute to force the game into overtime. Despite NAU’s six shots in overtime, neither team scored the game-winning goal. The match ended in a 1-1, double overtime tie.
Eastern Washington got its first win of the season as it defeated Idaho 2-1, on Friday. EWU’s Cassie Black got the scoring going early as she scored in the 3rd minute of the match. Eastern Washington’s Alisha Stott scored in the 70th minute to give the Eagles the 2-0 lead. Idaho scored in the 79th minute but never found the equalizer, which gave Eastern the 2-1 win.
North Dakota also got its first win of the season; against in-state rival North Dakota State. UND defeated North Dakota State 4-2 with goals from Caitlin Dahl, Robyn Wujkowski, Zoe Foster and Marissa Ricci. On Sunday, North Dakota lost to Boise State 3-1. UND’s lone goal came from Michelle Stingle.
Sacramento State went 1-1 last week after defeating Fresno Pacific and losing to Nevada. On Wednesday, Sacramento State defeated Fresno Pacific 1-0 with the lone goal coming in the 43rd minute off of Jennifer Lum’s foot. On Sunday, Sacramento State kept trying to catch up to Nevada. Nevada scored in the 25th minute to go up 1-0. SAC’s Alyssa Anderson tied the match at 1-1 after a goal in the 37th minute. Just before the half, Nevada scored again to go ahead 2-1. In the 71st minute, SAC’s Josie Jogwe equalized the match again before Nevada scored the game winning goal in the 86th minute.
Weber State also went 1-1 over the weekend after defeating Wyoming and losing to Utah. On Friday, Weber State was down 2-0 within the first 13 minutes of the match against Wyoming. WSU went on to score three unanswered goals, with one from Brecken Holbrook and two from Mackenzie Harrison. Harrison’s second goal was the game-winner in the 88th minute. On Sunday, Weber State lost to Utah 4-0.
Portland State and Idaho State both traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Hawaii Tournament. Portland State went 1-1 while ISU went 0-2. On Friday, Portland State lost to Florida Gulf Coast 1-0 and Idaho State lost to Hawaii 4-1 with ISU’s lone goal coming from Amanda Ellsworth. On Sunday, Portland State defeated Hawaii 2-0, PSU’s Aurora Bodenhamer and Melissa Bishop each scored a goal. PSU was led by goalkeeper Caitlin Plese as she made 10 saves while the Vikings were outshot 20-5. Idaho State lost to Florida Gulf Coast 5-1. ISU’s goal came on a penalty kick in the 89th minute from Ka’imi Morreira.
On Friday, Northern Colorado tied New Mexico State 0-0. The Bears outshot NMSU 25-13, but neither team found the back of the net after 110 minutes of play.
Montana went 0-1-1 over the weekend as the Grizzlies faced Nebraska-Omaha and Creighton. On Friday, despite outshooting Nebraska-Omaha 26-8, the match ended in a 3-3 tie. UM’s goal scorers were India Watne, Tyler Adair and Mackenzie Akins. Against Creighton on Sunday, Montana’s Stephanie Carl scored the first goal of the match in the 67th minute. Creighton scored in the 87th minute to send the game into overtime. In the 94th minute, Creighton scored the game-winning goal to give Montana the 2-1 overtime loss.
Southern Utah fell to Arizona 6-1 and to Arizona State 4-0. SUU’s lone goal scorer of the weekend was Kelsea Godfrey.
