OGDEN, Utah (October 15, 2013) – With two weeks of conference soccer remaining, Portland State tops the Big Sky standings with a 5-0-1 record.
On Friday, Portland State and Southern Utah tied 0-0 in double overtime. The Thunderbirds ended the Vikings four-game conference-winning streak. On Sunday, Portland State defeated Northern Arizona 2-1 in overtime. NAU took an early lead after Cierra Gamble converted on a penalty kick in the 18th minute. Eryn Brown equalized the match for Portland State with a goal in the 63rd minute, which sent the game into overtime. In the 97th minute, PSU’s Cori Bianchini scored the game-winning goal.
Northern Colorado went 2-0 over the weekend after defeating Eastern Washington and Montana. On Friday, Northern Colorado defeated Eastern Washington 2-1. EWU’s Katie Cashman was the first to score with a goal in the 66th minute. Rebecca Lancia equalized the match with a goal in the 76th minute. Less than two minutes later, Danielle Birdsall scored the game-winning goal for the Bears. On Sunday, the Bears beat Montana 4-0. Chandler Guetz had two goals for the Bears. NC’s Paige Morris and Essence Ortiz-Lanier scored one goal each.
Weber State and Idaho State played each other in their only match of the weekend. The two teams tied 1-1 in double overtime. Chansi Crompton scored the first goal of the match in the 20th minute for Weber State. In the 49th minute, Idaho State’s Allyssa Kenney equalized the match, which sent the game into overtime. After 20 minutes of scoreless play, the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
North Dakota got its first conference win since joining the Big Sky Conference after defeating Eastern Washington 3-1, on Sunday. EWU’s Katy Allen scored the first goal of the match in the 25th minute. Zoe Foster equalized the match with a goal in the 41st minute of play. Kirsten Olson scored in the 60th minute for North Dakota to give UND the 2-1 lead. With less than three minutes left, Andrea Hyduke scored an insurance goal for North Dakota, giving them the 3-1 win. In North Dakota’s other match over the weekend, UND lost 3-0 to Montana.
In Northern Arizona’s first game of the weekend, the Lumberjacks defeated Sacramento State 3-0. NAU’s goals came from Haley Wingender, Savannah Berry and Cierra Gamble. On Sunday, the NAU lost to Portland State 2-1 in overtime. Gamble scored the lone goal for NAU after converting a penalty kick in the 18th minute.
Sacramento State lost its first match of the weekend to Northern Arizona 3-0. On Sunday, SAC defeated Southern Utah 4-0. The Hornets’ Gabriela Trenton recorded a hat trick. SAC’s other goal came from Jordyn Rolling, who assisted on two of Trenton’s goals.
On Friday, Montana defeated North Dakota 3-0. The Grizzlies’ Mackenzie Akins scored the first goal of the match with a goal in the 20th minute. Maddey Frey added two more goals for the Griz, to give UM the 3-0 win. On Sunday, Montana lost 4-0 to Northern Colorado.
In its first match of the weekend, Southern Utah ended Portland State’s four-game conference-winning streak after tying the Vikings 0-0 in double overtime. On Sunday, the Thunderbirds lost to Sacramento State, 4-0.
Eastern Washington lost both of its matches over the weekend. EWU lost 2-1 to Northern Colorado and lost to North Dakota 3-1, despite outshooting UND 31 to 14.
