POCATELLO, Idaho (Nov. 4, 2012) – For the first time since 2006, Idaho State University’s women’s soccer team has won the Big Sky Championship.
No. 1 seed Idaho State and No. 3 seed Montana finished regulation and overtime tied 0-0. Idaho State won the shootout 4-3 on Sunday, capping a tournament that saw two of the three matches decided by a shootout.
The entire match between ISU and UM was a defensive battle. Montana ended the match with three shots on goal and Idaho State ended with two shots on goal. After 110 minutes of scoreless play, the match headed into a shootout with an Idaho State 4-3 win.
ISU’s Sheridan Hapsic, the MVP of the Championship, made three saves in the shootout. Hapsic blocked UM’s Paytyn Wheeler, Shannon Lindsay and Mackenzie Akins. ISU’s Allyssa Kenney and Morgan Olson each missed their shots.
Idaho State’s Amanda Ellsworth, Ka’imi Morreira, Mikaela Carrillo and Allyson Stainbrook each made their shots. Montana’s Erin Craig, Britta Hjalmarsson and Lauren Costa made their shots. Sheridan Hapsic made the game-winning save on the sixth kicker, to give Idaho State the victory over Montana.
This is Idaho State’s fifth championship, but first since 2006. From the 2001 to 2006 seasons, ISU won four of the six Big Sky Championship titles. This is the second time ISU’s head coach Allison Gibson has led her team to be Big Sky Champions. The Bengals were selected seventh in the preseason poll.
Idaho State (11-5-3) will find out who its opponent in the NCAA College Cup on Monday. The announcement will be made at 4:30 p.m. Eastern on NCAA.com.
