Weber State, Sacramento State and Portland State earned Big Sky Conference football victories on Saturday, while Eastern Washington won a wild non-conference game against a future Big Sky team.
In Ron McBride's final home game as Weber State coach, the Wildcats beat Northern Arizona 34-31 behind 407 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns from C.J. Tuckett.
Weber State QB Mike Hoke scored the game-winning touchdown with 26 seconds remaining on a 2-yard run. Northern Arizona took a 31-27 lead with 1:36 to play on a 9-yard run from Zach Bauman, who rushed for 126 yards.
Earlier this week, McBride announced he will retire after seven seasons with Weber State. Tuckett made sure it was a memorable day, rushing for 254 yards and three touchdowns. The junior also had 144 kick return yards and nine receiving yards. The 407 yards were the second-most in Big Sky history. Portland State's Ryan Fuqua had 437 all-purpose yards in a 2001 game against Eastern Washington.
McBride's final game is next Saturday against Portland State.
The Vikings survived 23-17 at Northern Colorado, picking up their fourth straight win to move to 5-2 in league and 7-3 overall. Northern Colorado's Patrick Walker scored with 3.6 seconds left, but the touchdown was called back on a penalty. PSU's DeShawn Shead returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown with 3:54 to play.
Portland State quarterback Connor Kavanaugh rushed for 132 yards and became the Big Sky's all-time QB rushing leader.
Northern Colorado's Patrick Walker had nine catches for 126 yards, finishing his career with five straight 100-yard receiving days. Northern Colorado finished its season 0-11.
Zack Nash tallied five of Sacramento State's 10 sacks in the Hornets' 24-9 win over Idaho State. Sacramento State's defense held the Bengals to three field goals and 200 yards of total offense. Quarterback Garrett Safron and senior running back Bryan Hilliard scored rushing touchdowns in the second half.
Eastern Washington's Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 436 yards and five touchdowns as the Eagles beat Cal Poly 53-51 in three overtimes. Mitchell hit Greg Herd on a 25-yard score in the third overtime, and then ran in the two-point conversion. Cal Poly scored a touchdown, but failed on its 2-point conversion in the third overtime.
Mitchell connected with junior Nicholas Edwards for 10 catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns.
Next Saturday is the final day of the regular season. Montana State and Montana, both idle this week, meet in Bozeman. The winner earns the Big Sky's automatic bid to the Division I playoffs. Kickoff is 12:05 p.m.
Sacramento State takes on UC Davis in the Causeway Classic. Eastern Washington closes its season at Idaho State. Northern Arizona closes at home against Southern Utah. Portland State plays host to Weber State.
