2010 Big Sky Soccer
Week Three Roundup
Big Sky soccer action continued this week with a full slate of tough non-conference play. When the dust settled the Big Sky received two wins from Northern Colorado and one from Idaho State. Northern Arizona and Sacramento State finished the weekend unbeaten with three ties between the two programs.
Northern Colorado traveled south to Colorado Springs, Colo. to participate in the Air Force Fall Classic. On Friday the Bears dispatched Fairleigh-Dickinson 4-0, with two goals from sophomore Eryn Daniel. Danielle Birdsall started the scoring with a goal in the 21st minute, Byrde scored the next two goals, and then Lauren Wayland iced the match with a goal in the 88th minute.
On Sunday the Bears met The Citadel on the pitch in the final day of action at the Air Force Fall Classic. Northern Colorado was able to overcome a one goal deficit in the second half to win 2-1. Junior forward Ariel Cook tallied both goals for the Bears, pushing her season total to four. The first goal came in transition off an assist from Kimmie Feilder, while the second was a header off a free kick from Olivia Deadmond. Northern Colorado has now moved to 4-2-0 on the season.
Northern Arizona returned to action after a weekend off, with matches against Arizona and New Mexico State. The Lumberjacks held a 1-0 lead late in the match against Arizona, but they were unable to hold on for the win. Northern Arizona would earn a corner kick in the 28th minute and take advantage with the games’ first goal. Senior Sam Monahan took the corner, and senior defender Kristi Andreassen was able to deflect the ball past Arizona’s goalkeeper.
NAU continued its weekend road trip in Las Crucas, N.M. with a match against New Mexico State. Sunday’s results were much like Friday’s, with NAU losing a late 1-0 lead for the second-consecutive game with an eventual 1-1 tie. The Lumberjacks took advantage of an early free kick after an Aggie foul. On the free kick NAU senior Kristi Andreassen sent a ball onto the left side of the box. The feed found junior Carolyn Savage, who was able to find the back of the net to give the Lumberjacks a 1-0 advantage.
Idaho State hosted the Idaho Governor’s Cup this past weekend at David Field in Pocatello, Idaho. Other participants in the tournament included Idaho, Boise State, and Utah Valley.
The Bengals were unable to get past the Vandals of Idaho on Friday, losing 2-1. Sophomore Ashley Jones scored Idaho State’s lone goal in the 14th minute, but Idaho responded minutes later with another goal. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half.
ISU responded nicely to the loss on Friday, with a tough win on Sunday over Boise State. Sophomore Rachel Strawn scored the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime with 6:08 remaining to capture a 1-0 win over the Broncos. The Bengals ended their two-game losing streak against the Broncos and improved to a 3-2-1 overall record while Boise State fell to 2-4-0 for the season.
Sacramento State played to a 0-0 scoreless draw with Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon. The Hornets stymied a previously explosive 49er offense, who was coming off three straight games with two goals, including back-to-back 2-1 wins over then No. 21 Washington State and then No. 16 Virginia Tech.
