The 2010 season has officially started for every team in the Big Sky now that Eastern Washington has gotten on the board with two matches this weekend.
Portland State emerged as the big winner this weekend, as the Vikings won two matches at the Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Vikings were able to earn their first overtime victory in almost four years, defeating the University of Louisiana at Monroe, 3-2, in double-overtime Friday night. ULM scored the first goal in the 38th minute, but the Vikings answered quickly with a goal of their own by Amanda Howie to tie the score at 1-1. Both squads collected goals in the second-half forcing over-time.
PSU junior Esty Geiger scored the golden goal, the first of her career, in the 104th minute of the contest. Sophomore Amanda Dutra received the assist after her shot was blocked and Geiger followed and found the back of the net.
The momentum from Friday night followed the Vikings into Sunday’s match against Albany. PSU got on the board quickly, as freshman Hannah Kimsey tallied a goal in the seventh minute.
In the 85th minute of play, junior Melissa Trammell would score the Portland State insurance goal with a chip shot that sailed over the goalkeepers head and into the back of the net. Senior Frankie Ross, the 2008 Big Sky Golden Boot Winner, found the back of the net on a long shot to put the Vikings up 3-0 with less than two minutes to play.
Idaho State also finished the weekend unbeaten. On Friday the Bengals beat the College of Idaho 4-1. ISU received goals from Rachel Strawn, Tara Bice, Laura Perez, and Kiley Godfrey. Strawn, Godfrey, and Perez also received assists on Bengal goals.
On Sunday Idaho State hosted an unbeaten Utah State squad. The Bengals were unable to put a blemish on the Aggies’ record but they were able to hold Utah State scoreless, prompting a 0-0 tie that improved ISU’s record to 2-1-1, and extended its unbeaten streak to three matches.
Sacramento State women’s soccer team earned its first win of the 2010 season in dramatic fashion as Laura Bahno scored a golden goal in the second overtime to give the Hornets a 2-1 victory over San Jose State.
Bahno slipped a shot just under the crossbar on a free kick from 35 yards out. The game-winner was tallied with less than two minutes left to play in the second overtime. Junior Elece McBride started the scoring for the Hornets when she connected on a shot from 11 yards out high into the top left corner of the net in the 36th minute.
The Hornets were unable to continue their winning ways on Sunday as they dropped a 1-0 decision to the Pacific Tigers in Stockton, Calif. After a scoreless first half, Pacific’s Angelica Figueroa knocked in a rebound for the game winner just minutes into the second period.
Eastern Washington opened its 2010 campaign with a hard fought 1-1 tie at Cal State Bakersfield. The Eagles got on the scoreboard first when Whitney Brannan beat Cal State Bakersfield’s goalkeeper Kym Gauzy. The goal was the sixth in Brannan’s career. Sara Byrne was credited with assist after she found Brannan on the well placed throw.
The Eagles then lost 4-0 to Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. EWU held the Titans to just one goal in the first half, but Cal State Fullerton eventually found the holes in the defense and tallied three goals in the second half.
Northern Colorado had its two game winning streak snapped by a 2-1 loss to Idaho Friday night in Greeley, Colo. The Bears then had to travel to Boulder, Colo. to face the University of Colorado on Sunday. UNC was unsuccessful in that match as well losing 2-0.
Montana hosted the first of its three tournaments this weekend. Friday the Grizzlies lost to Iowa State 1-0 and then were unable to overcome Gonzaga after rallying from a pair of deficits, losing 3-2.
Weber State had a tough time with in-state rival BYU in Provo, Utah Friday night. The Wildcats were only able to muster a late goal in a 5-1 loss to the Cougars.
