Cheney, Wash. (March 12, 2010) – Portland State advances to the Big Sky Women’s Basketball Championship game with a 62-47 victory. The Lady Griz defeated the Vikings in the 2009 championship game. Portland State will await the winner of no.1 Eastern Washington vs. no. 6 Montana State, with the championship game set for 2:00 p.m. PST.
The Vikings had three players score in double digits freshman Eryn Jones led the trio with 13 points. She shot 5-of-10 from the field along with four assists and four steals. Junior Kelli Valentine had 12 points, while senior Claire Faucher chipped in with 11 points, nine assists, and four steals.
Montana senior Lauren Beck scored 13 points in the losing effort. Teammate Sarah Ena finished with 10 points and five rebounds. The duo was the only Lady Griz players in double digits.
The Vikings finished the game with 39 rebounds, with 14 coming on the offensive side, to Montana’s 27.
Montana had won the Big Sky crown the two previous seasons and four of the last six. Portland State is looking for its first Big Sky title in program history.
