No. 5 Eastern Washington won its sixth straight game, beating Southern Utah 31-24 in Cheney. Bo Levi Mitchell threw a 24-yard TD pass to Brandon Kaufman with 3:39 to play. EWU's Taiwan Jones, a Walter Payton Award candidate, rushed for 158 yards and scored on a 62-yard run.
No. 13 Montana beat North Dakota 27-17 behind senior running back Chase Reynolds, who rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns.
The Big Sky champion won't be crowned until the final Saturday of the regular season.
Montana State can clinch at least a share of the title and the automatic bid to the playoffs with a win over Montana in Missoula.
Eastern Washington can win the automatic bid with a win over Idaho State and a Montana State loss.
If Eastern Washington and Montana State tie at 7-1, MSU earns the automatic bid because of its 30-7 win over the Eagles.
Both Montana State and Eastern Washington have eight victories and will likely both be in the 20-team playoff field. Montana, which has made the playoffs 17 straight seasons, sits a 7-3 overall and might not make the playoffs with a loss to Montana State.
