All-Sports Trophy

The All-Sports Trophy has been a part of the Big Sky Conference since its inception in 1963. The trophy is designed to award schools for overall athletic excellence. Schools are awarded points based on team finish in regular season Big Sky standings for soccer, volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball and tennis. Points are also awarded in men’s and women’s cross country, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field and women’s golf by virtue of finish at the Big Sky Championship. This is the fifth year that women’s soccer has been included in the All-Sports standings. By adding women’s soccer to the point totals, teams are ranked according to average points per sport rather than total points accumulated.

The Big Sky has determined a men’s All-Sports Trophy winner since 1963, while the first women’s All-Sports Trophy winner was announced in 1989 following the first academic year that the league sponsored women’s athletics. From 1989-2002 a combined winner was determined by including all men’s and women’s sports. In 2003 the combined award was replaced by the Presidents’ Cup, which also takes into account academic performance by member institutions along with athletic competition.

The winners of the 2007-08 trophies were Northern Arizona on the men’s side and Sacramento State on the women’s side.

Sacramento State captured the All-Sports Trophy for the first time in school history. The Hornets captured regular-season titles in soccer, tennis, a share of the volleyball championship, and titles indoor and outdoor track and field. The Hornets averaged 11.4 points per sport.

The Northern Arizona men averaged 13.3 points per sport, winning titles in cross country and outdoor track and field. The Lumberjacks were second in men’s basketball, and third in football and indoor track and field.

Northern Arizona has now claimed nine Men’s All-Sports Trophies, including two in a row. Only Weber State, which has won 14 Men’s All-Sports Trophies, has won more.
