Portland State Wins Regular Season Soccer Championship Tanner Gooch 10/30/2009
Ogden, Utah (October 30, 2009) – The Portland State Vikings have claimed the program’s first regular season soccer championship since 2004. Entering action on Friday four Big Sky schools had a shot at claiming the title, but as matches unfolded through out the day Portland State remained standing.
The Vikings held their own fate in their hands heading into the match against upset minded Sacramento State. The Hornets also had a shot at the regular season title, but would have needed plenty of help to get to the top of the standings. In a defensive battle the match ended in a 0-0 tie, leaving the door open for Northern Arizona to leap the Vikings and win the championship.
The Lumberjacks were unable to take advantage of their good fortune as they ran into an inspired Northern Colorado squad on senior night in Greeley, Colo., losing 4-0. With that the Vikings claim the title and will host the Big Sky Conference tournament on Nov. 6th.
Eastern Washington punched its ticket to the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Montana earlier on Friday. The Eagles will enter the tournament as the no. 2 seed, the Lumberjacks could be the no. 3 or no. 4, while Sacramento State’s fate is tied to the Idaho State Bengals. Idaho State will travel to Ogden to play Weber State Oct. 25th and anything but a win will knock the Bengals out and put the Hornets in the remaining tournament spot.
